One of Zdzislaw Beksinski's portraits, which he sent to those closest to him, using the reverse as space for writing letters. The self-portrait was most probably created circa 1970.
Drawer, graphic artist, painter and photographer. He studied at the Krakow University of Science and Technology. In the 50s, he created works of a surrealist-expressionistic character. At the turn of the 50s and 60s, he referred to the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke and existential content. Around 1960, he made graphical works with an expressionistic and turpistic form as well as gypsum and metal sculptures. Motifs from religions of the Far East appeared in his work from the end of the 60s until the early 70s. Starting from the mid-70s, Beksinski was occupied almost solely with oil painting. In 1977, he left Sanok and moved to Warsaw permanently. He put his work on display in France, Germany and nearly all the major art centres in Poland. In 1999, the History Museum prepared the largest retrospective exhibition by the artist at the castle in Sanok. The Sanok History Museum also holds the richest collection of the artist’s works. He eagerly used computer techniques in the collages he made before his death.
